Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
