Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
