Why the DNC is Hiding its 2024 Election Autopsy: A Deep Dive.

This decision by the Democratic National Committee to withhold the public viewing regarding its internal autopsy report concerning the 2024 election seems stunning but entirely predictable. Opposed to hard truths, the Democrats' governing body behaves more like a PR firm than an electoral entity committed to cultivating local power to secure victories.

A Climate Resistant to Internal Critique

Unwilling to challenge the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has continued within that legacy all through this past year. Making public an official autopsy could have demonstrated that party leaders actually want to foster honest conversation regarding the missteps that enabled Donald Trump to win re-election. However, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there are no lessons to glean from the electoral catastrophe from the last cycle.

Our guiding principle: does this help us win? If the answer is no, it becomes a sideline issue from the core mission," a rationale that has been offered for withholding the report.

Critical Problems an Autopsy Would Have Examined

An autopsy report of substance would not dodge a series of difficult topics. Among them are:

  • Voter Disengagement: The loss among a significant portion of the electorate that backed the party's candidate during the previous election became a critical factor in the close 2024 election.
  • The Insistence to Seek Re-election: The stubborn decision by the incumbent to seek re-election, coupled with an extremely delayed exit, has been criticized as robbing Democratic voters the chance for a genuine choice.
  • Failing the Working-Class Base: While facing inflation, the campaign allegedly ceding to elite contributors while failing to confront the role of profit-seeking.
  • A Foreign Policy Factor: The failure to shift an approach regarding the situation in Gaza is cited as losing many voters, notably among young people, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • A Decline in Young Voter Backing: Extensive evidence demonstrates a significant drop-off in support for the party from the youth electorate.

A History Shunning Scrutiny

The decision to withhold fits a pattern of sidestepping difficult realities. This mirrors a dynamic where virtually every elected Democrat in Washington acquiesced to a sitting president's decision for running for re-election until a catastrophic campaign event compelled an exit.

At the same time, overwhelming numbers of Democratic voters were repeatedly informing pollsters that they opposed the incumbent to be the nominee.

Financial Concerns

A substantive autopsy might also examine questions regarding financial allocations, including what sums flowed to insider consultants as well as ad buyers during a campaign which expended a staggering sum in a short period.

The Broader Problem

Fundamentally, the secrecy surrounding this report is symptomatic of a deference to the established hierarchy who engineered an unsuccessful presidential campaign. The implication for rank-and-file members – which includes countless loyal volunteers – appears to be that they do not be trusted to understand what party chiefs say they discovered from an analysis based on extensive interviews.

A party unable to honestly assess where it went wrong is unlikely to break free from the cycle that proved so advantageous to the winning candidate.
